Avoid These Common Toothbrushing Mistakes

Toothbrushing has become an “automatic” part of our daily lives that some people are like on auto-mode when they’re brushing their teeth. We don’t put much thought or focus into the activity anymore. But that’s just wrong. If you get sloppy on this habit, you become a lot more vulnerable to cavities, gum diseases, tooth decay, and other alarming dental problems. Below is a list of all the brushing mistakes that you should definitely avoid.

(Mistake #1) Using the Wrong Toothbrush
People think there’s nothing wrong with using just about any toothbrush they find in the market. Richard H. Price, DMD, the consumer advisor for the American Dental Association says that it’s imperative to consider the size of a person’s mouth when picking a toothbrush. If you open your mouth too widely to get the brush in, that means that the toothbrush is too big. Apart from that, the handle should be comfortable enough to handle. If you’re able to find the right size for you, it will be much easier to brush your teeth the right way.

(Mistake #2) Brushing Too Quickly
Today’s lifestyle can be described with one word: hectic. People are always in a rush to finish the things they need to do. That includes brushing their teeth. The point is, brushing takes time. Everyone should devote at least two minutes of their day to brush their teeth not only once but twice or thrice, preferably after each meal. If you hurry too much in brushing your teeth, you won’t have enough time to remove the plaque buildup that can increase the risk of various dental problems including bleeding and swollen gums. If you find it hard to stick to the time recommended, buy a toothbrush that comes with a built-in timer.

(Mistake #3) Brushing Too Hard
Brushing too hard isn’t recommended. Some people brush aggressively to remove the plaque. But this can also erode the enamel of the tooth and expose the tooth, which in turn can lead to gum irritation and even tooth loss. Brush gently for two to three minutes with a toothbrush that has soft bristles.

(Mistake #4) Not Brushing Inner Tooth Surfaces
Don’t neglect the inner surfaces of the teeth. People are too keen in removing dirt and plaque on the outer surfaces without paying as much attention on the inner surfaces. This is why, plaque buildup is more common in these areas. Make sure that you take the time to clean these surfaces as well, especially those of the front teeth.

(Mistake #5) Not Rinsing the Toothbrush
It’s a common sense to rinse the toothbrush after brushing. But some people particularly those who are always in a hurry tend to forget about this part sometimes. When that happens, the next time a person brushes his teeth, he brings all the bacteria back into his mouth. It’s also essential to let the toothbrush dry after using since moist toothbrush cultivate even more bacteria.
