Can a Low Carb Diet Cause Bad Breath?

As you can guess from its name, a low-carb diet is a type of diet that limits the intake of carbohydrates. This means limited intake of bread, rice, pasta, and of course, sugar. Many people who have tried this diet can attest that it works wonders for your waistline. It’s effective in removing those flabs in your belly that make people think either you’re pregnant or you drink a lot of beer. But like everything else, this one also has a drawback. What’s the catch? It can give you bad breath!

People who are into low-carb diets are at increased risk of suffering from halitosis more popularly known as bad breath. Since more than 25 million have jumped into the well-known Atkins diet and some other low-carb dietary plan, there might actually be an outbreak of bad breath in the coming days. That’s according to the National Marketing Institute.

While this may just sound funny to others, those who are suffering from bad breath definitely won’t take it lightly. Bad breath can affect your self-confidence and even your personal relationships and career. So why does this happen? How can lack of carbohydrates trigger foul mouth odor?

Here’s how: bad breath for no-carb eaters is caused by some chemicals, which are released into the breath when the body is in the fat-burning stage. These chemicals, which are known as ketones, are actually the “hallmark of Atkins diet”. Having stinky breath is an indicator that your low-carb diet is working.

Since carbs are not available, the body uses other stored fats and proteins as sources of energy. Because of this, the person gets bad breath. This explanation came from Kenneth Burrell, DDS, the senior director of the council on scientific affairs of the American Dental Association.

Suggested Treatment/Relief:

The foul odor you have in your mouth isn’t something that you can blame on poor oral hygiene. In fact, even if you do everything to brush, floss, and scrape your tongue religiously, if the root cause of the bad breath is a metabolic process, you can’t do anything about it except to change your dietary ways.

If you want to get rid of the bad smell in your mouth, you should reconsider your diet and adjust it. Temporary solution is to mask the odor with mouthwash but that would only be effective for a few minutes. You need to change your diet completely or at least, add a little bit of carbs into your meals.

Consulting a nutritionist who can formulate for you a well-balanced diet that doesn’t completely eradicate carbs will help you a lot in solving this predicament. Also, don’t rely solely on diet for your weight loss program. Be sure to incorporate proper and regular exercise as well so you can have better chances of success without having to sacrifice your breath.
