Diabetes and Blood Sugar
People who have been diagnosed with diabetes are faced with the great challenge of maintaining their blood sugar levels at a normal rate because when this increases, it can be fatal to them. Hypoglycemia is equally life-threatening as high blood sugar levels. The glucose, a kind of sugar, is an essential nutrient for the body. It is a source of energy which is constantly needed by the body’s cells. Hypoglycemia is not so common and is not usually experienced by most diabetic adults or diabetic children ten years old and older, but it does happen. This condition should be quickly diagnosed and treated as soon as possible, otherwise it can get worse very quickly and lead to more serious problems including death.
Food, especially those which contain carbohydrates, is the source of all blood sugars in the body. Hypoglycemia can result from the situation wherein a diabetic person has not eaten any food for quite a while. Also, it can happen when diabetics deliberately avoid consuming foods containing carbohydrates.
Exercise is also generally recommended to diabetics aside from reducing sugar intake. But sometimes, excessive exercise can cause blood sugar problems. Muscles require energy when you exercise, and sugar is one vital source of energy, and so low blood sugar levels can take place after you get too involved in an exercise. Insufficient blood glucose cannot supply the needed energy of your active body.
When blood sugar levels become too low, this will affect the brain. You may experience confusion and inability to perform tasks. Also, some other symptoms are sweating, anxiety, heart palpitations, hunger pangs, blurred vision and other visual problems. The quick solution for this is to eat or drink a fast-acting glucose food item. You can opt for half a glass of fruit juices, five to six pieces of hard candy, a teaspoon of honey or sugar, milk or a glucose tablet.
