Diabetes – A Metabolic Disease

Diabetes is a set of metabolic diseases in which a person suffers from high blood sugar. This happens either when the body does not make sufficient insulin, or when the cells do not act in response to the insulin that is produced by the body. The high blood sugar produced shows common symptoms like frequent urination and increased thirst and hunger.

There are three main types of diabetes:

• Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the body is incapable to produce enough insulin. The most common cure to it is to take insulin injections regularly.

• Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the cells in the body fail to react to the insulin produced. This at times also leads to absolute deficiency of insulin in the body.

• Gestational Diabetes is what mostly pregnant women suffer from. Pregnant women who have not had past records of diabetes prior to pregnancy might start having a high blood sugar level, and this often leads to type 2 diabetes.

The other types of diabetes congenital diabetes, which happens due to the genetic flaws of the secretion of insulin, steroid diabetes stimulated by high doses of glucocorticoids and many other forms of monogenic diabetes.

There is no cure for diabetes. However, regular exercise and medication can keep the blood sugar level under control. The immediate steps that must be taken to cure high blood glucose levels are regular testing of blood glucose levels, exercise, planning your meals, weight control and proper medication.

It is very important to visit a dietitian on time to know the exact amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fats in your diet. People suffering with diabetes should consume the same amount of nutrients everyday. This prevents the fluctuation of blood sugar content from rising to extreme levels.

– Medication –
Medications that help treat diabetes comprise insulin and glucose-lowering pills, which are also known as oral hypoglycemic drugs. People suffering with type 1 diabetes need daily insulin injections. Injections might be used anywhere from one to four times per day.

– Exercise –
Diabetics can benefit from regular exercise and a balanced diet. They help keeping the blood sugar level in control. Exercising also helps lose weight and keep a check on high blood pressure, which also lead to increased blood sugar levels. Additionally, people with diabetes who indulge in regular exercise are less likely to suffer a cardiac arrest than those who do not exercise.
