Drinking four or more eight-ounce glasses of water every day is very good for you.
The French research, which involved 3,615 men and women with normal blood sugar levels at the beginning of the study, revealed that those who took in more than 34 ounces of water a day had 21 percent less risk of developing hyperglycemia for the next nine years as compared to those who drank only 16 ounces or less a day.
The study took into consideration other factors that play a role in a person's level of blood sugar such as sex, age, weight and physical activity. Consumption of sugary drinks, beer and wine were also taken into account.
Other medical experts point out that this is not enough basis to say that drinking water can lower blood sugar directly. But if confirmed by additional research, it can be added to the long list of reasons to drink plenty of water a day. It's a good idea for the 26 million Americans suffering from diabetes to drink up.
Apart from helping veer away the serious disease of diabetes, other health benefits of drinking water include the following:
Aids in Weight Loss
Water flushes out the by-products of fat breakdown. Not only that, it also reduces hunger that if you drink a glass of water before a meal, you'll find yourself eating less than you normally do. Water has zero calories.
Alleviates Headaches and Back Pains
Many headaches and back pains are due to dehydration. Drinking water can help alleviate the pain and make you feel better immediately.
Makes You Look Young
Nourish your skin with water and you'll find yourself looking younger even as you age. This is because water helps replenish skin tissues, increase elasticity of the skin, and moisturize it.
Improves Work Performance
Did you know that at least 70 percent of the brain is made up of water? Surprising, isn't it? This is the reason drinking water can improve your brain performance, focus and memory.
Energizes Your Body
Water serves as fuel for your muscles. Just like the brain, muscles are at least 70 percent water and that's why you'll feel more energetic after drinking a glass of water.
Water is an effective way to boost your metabolism because it helps greatly in the process of digestion. It works with fiber to make your daily bowel movement easier and smoother.
Boosts the Immune System
Blood is at least 80 percent water. Water oxygenates your blood and flushes toxins, boosting the immune function of the body and improving the body's ability to ward off viral and bacterial infections.
Reduces the Risk of Cancer
Some studies have found that drinking plenty of water every day can reduce the risks of some forms of cancer like colon and bladder cancer. This works by diluting the concentration of cancer-causing agents in the urine.
