Fish Oil Versus Krill Oil: Which is More Powerful?

We’ve known for a long time that fish oil is beneficial for the body that it empowers the mind and lowers cholesterol. But just recently, krill oil has emerged and has been wanting to get a share of the limelight that fish oil has been enjoying all these years. Krill oil comes from krill, which are tiny crustaceans resembling shrimps that reside in the colder areas of the oceans. They measure about 1 to 6 centimeters long.

Fish oil, on the other hand, is derived from fish species such as tuna, mackerel, herring, halibut, salmon, sardines and cod.

Getting fish oil supplements would eliminate that concern as long as you are able to get supplements that have undergone extensive molecular distillation. Krill oil, meanwhile, live in the fresh waters of Antarctic so they don’t contain any of the toxin and heavy metals that are said to be found in fish.

Both oils offer practically the same benefits to people’s health. They both protect the heart, lower bad cholesterol, increase good cholesterol, improve brain function, and aid in weight loss. However, it is important to note that krill oil has far more antioxidants than fish oil. Krill oil contains astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin E that can fight the free radicals in the body.

In terms of food allergies, fish oil is safer to take in. Many are actually allergic to krill oil. Krill oil has also been said to have certain side effects such as diarrhea but no study has been done to prove that yet.

Krill oil is a lot more expensive than fish oil. That’s because the former is new in the market and is more difficult to harvest and convert into a supplement. Despite that, some people think that it is the better investment because of its long shelf life and high content of antioxidants. Moreover, people prefer krill oil to avoid the fishy after-taste that comes with consuming fish oil.
