Soursop, or Annona Muricata, is a large fruit of a small fast growing tree native to the Central and South American countries. It belongs to the family of Annonaceae and is also a native of the sub saharan african countries. Today, this fruit is widely grown in some parts of Southeast Asia.

The soursop is very tasty. Its green spiky skin may not look appetizing but the white meat of this fruit is known for its delicious taste. The tree and the fruit are known in various names such as Guanabanana in Spanish, Graviola in Brazil and Guyabano in the Philippines.

Aside from its delicious taste, soursop is also loaded with many nutrients that are known to benefit health. Sousop is rich in amino acids, vitamin C, iron, carbohydrates, fibers, calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin and thiamine. You can enjoy this fruit because this healthy fruit is low in sodium, fat and bad cholesterol. Because of its nutrients, soursop is being manufactured as food supplements and extracts in the market. One can get the health benefits of this fruit by eating the fruit, taking food supplements of the same content, and by eating the leaves and stems after boiling.

Soursop is claimed to be an effective alternative treatment for cancer. The National Cancer Institute conducted a study on the possibility of this fruit to cure cancer. Studies have shown that the leaves and stems of soursop were found to be effective in killing malignant cells. Furthermore, a recent study conducted at the Catholic University of South Korea stated that a certain chemical found in soursop can selectively kill colon cancer cells, and that the chemical is almost ten times more potent than Adriamycin. Adriamycin is a chemical agent used for chemotherapy. What is more remarkable is that contrary to the traditional chemotherapy that kills both cancer and normal cells, soursop only kills cancer cells and leaves healthy cells to grow normally. It is also known to spare cancer patients the side effects of chemotherapy such as hair loss, weight loss and nausea.

Prevents UTI and Slows Aging Process
Its rich content of vitamin C increases the amount of antioxidant in the body that eliminates harmful toxins in the body and thus slows aging process. Aside from this, the vitamin C in soursop prevents the occurrence of UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) and other kidney ailments because it increases urine acidity level.

This fruit is rich in fibers that aids in relieving constipation. Soursop adds bulk to the stool and facilitates easy elimination in the body.
