How Good Posture Leads to Better Health

When we were still children, most of our parents would say that we need to have a good posture in order to look more presentable to the public. You may have heard your mother or father telling you to walk with a straight back, to sit up straight and quit slouching. Many of us may have listened with the left ear and let the message exit through our right ear. Children may not fully appreciate the importance of good posture, but you must never give up in reminding them about it.

What is posture? Why is it getting all the attention especially in fields such as modeling and show business? Posture refers to the position or the way you hold your body against gravity when standing up, sitting, or lying down. In order to have good posture, you need to train your body how to walk, stand, lie and sit in positions that place as little strain as possible on the spine and supporting the ligaments and muscles. Training your body is not as difficult as many people think, you just need to have determination and self-discipline to achieve your goals.

Effects of Posture Gone Bad
Our everyday lives are filled with activities that usually involve too much twisting, bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, walking and many more. These activities may contribute to the development of bad posture especially when you do not take notice.

Some examples of bad posture are slouching or leaning forward when using a computer, carrying heavy items at arm length, sliding forward in a chair, bending your back to lift heavy loads and others. Bad posture has several negative effects on your health such as pain on the neck, back and shoulders.

Good Posture: Examples that You Must Follow
Having a good posture is a sure way to have better health. Here are examples of good postures:

1. While standing, keep your shoulders back and your knees straight. Tuck your stomach in and make sure to keep your back nice and straight.

2. When lifting heavy things, keep your back straight and your legs bent. Also, keep the load close to your body.

3. When sitting on a chair, both of your feet should lay flat on the floor and the back should be straight and against the back of the chair.

4. When you are sleeping, place your pillow below your head and not your shoulders. Also, make sure that the mattress is firm enough to support the spine.

Having good posture has psychological and health benefits. The person will feel more confident and better about him/herself. In addition, good posture prevents backache and muscular pain. It also prevents your muscles from becoming strained and overused. Good posture also takes stress off the joints and ligaments which support the spine and lumbar region. You can also use your muscles more efficiently, giving you more energy and preventing muscle fatigue.
