Good news for those who are a little heavy in terms of weight: it’s possible to be fat, fit, and fabulous! In fact, it’s much better than being thin and unfit. This is according to Steve Blair, PED, professor of exercise science, biostatistics and epidemiology at the University of South Carolina.
Even if you are overweight but you exercise at least 150 minutes a week, you have 50 percent less risk of mortality than people who have normal weight but do not exercise at all. Take note however that there’s this line that separates overweight people from obese people. If your body mass index (BMI) changes from overweight to obese, the 50 percent less risk of mortality isn’t true anymore.
Weight is not the only risk factor, so is lack of physical activity. In one study done among overweight adults and obese people, it was found that those who were active had normal levels of blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. They also had normal risk for heart disease and diabetes, which are supposedly aggravated by excess weight. This emphasizes the fact that becoming fit is more important than slimming down.
While exercise can surely help a lot in curbing those health problems mentioned above, it’s a must to remember that it doesn’t eradicate the other risks of having excess weight, so it’s also necessary to watch your diet. In diabetes, for example, both diet and exercise are instrumental for prevention and proper management of this condition. A study published in the journal Obesity reveals that people who have the highest BMI also had unhealthy eating habits.
Excess weight certainly poses health risks and dangers. Eating well and exercising can help a lot. Aim for a well-balanced diet packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. Strive to engage in a workout routine for at least 30 minutes of cardio five days a week. Add strength training sessions twice a week.
The bottom line is if you can’t be slim, at least be fit. If you’re slim but not fit, that’s not something to be proud of. Being fit is very important whether you’re skinny or heavy. Eat proper diet and exercise regularly.
Moreover, feel good about yourself. Even if you’re chubby, you can look great with the right choices on clothing and suitable fashion styles. And it’s also about confidence and how you carry yourself.
