Caring for your teeth? It’s a lot easier than you think! It doesn’t have to be rocket science to maintain your bright and shiny pearls. All you have to do are these four things: brush your teeth, floss them, eat healthy, and visit the dentist. These basic steps will help keep you away from tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems.
Brushing Your Teeth
Brushing the teeth should be done at least twice a day. Of course, it’s better to brush after every meal. When you brush your teeth, you’re able to remove the plaque or the film layer of bacteria that holds onto the surface of the teeth. When bacteria feed on the food that you eat, they produce acid that can wear off the outer layer of the teeth called enamel.
To brush properly, put a pea-sized dab of toothpaste on a soft-bristled toothbrush. Use small circular motions to move the brush across the surface of the teeth. Do this for a few minutes per every section of the teeth. Don’t forget the backside of the lower and upper teeth as these are the most neglected part of the mouth.
Also, don’t brush too aggressively so as not to cause the gums to recede and expose the root. Be sure that the bristles reach the spaces in between the teeth. Clean the tongue by brushing it or by using a tongue scraper. This cleans the tongue and keeps your breath fresh. Spend about two to three minutes in brushing your teeth and then rinse with water afterwards. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months.
Flossing Your Teeth
Some people think that brushing their teeth is enough. It’s not. There are certain areas in the mouth particularly in between the teeth that the toothbrush is not able to reach. For this, you must use a dental floss. It gets rid of the food particles that get stuck in between the teeth. This is important because if the plaque stays there, it turns into a hard substance called tartar that you won’t be able to remove no matter how aggressive you brush your teeth.
The right way to floss is to get an 18-inch strip of floss. Wind it around the middle fingers of each of your hands. Leave about an inch for the flossing. Use this to floss the top teeth then go to the bottom part. Don’t push the floss against the gums too hard to avoid tearing and bleeding. Move it gently against the tooth and along the gum line. Don’t miss the back teeth.
Eating a Healthy Diet
What you eat can affect your dental health. That is why, it’s important that you exercise critical judgment when choosing foods and drinks to consume every day. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables as well as fiber. These foods are natural scrubs for the teeth. Keep those that contain lots of starches and sugar at bay. It’s also best to minimize consumption of items that are high in acid. The longer these foods and drinks stay inside your mouth, the more damage they can inflict on your teeth. Avoid candies, cookies, cakes, pies, and soda.
Visiting the Dentist
Finally, you have to visit the dentist ideally twice a year but once a year is also fine. Regular checkup and professional cleanings are a must to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Don’t hesitate to see your dentist too if you experience any problem with your teeth such as when you have bleeding gums or cavities.
