Noni – the Wonder Plant!

Noni is a flowering shrub that belongs to the coffee family with an unpleasant odor coming from its fruit. Every part of the noni plant can be used; the bark can make dyes, the leaves can make skin lotions, the seeds can be roasted and eaten, and most of all, the fruit can be extracted to make noni juice.

Noni plants are considered as major medicinal crops by National Agricultural Statistics Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. Thought to be introduced by early Polynesian settlers, the plant can now be found throughout the United States growing in lava fields, forests, and near streams. Noni fruits are harvested year-round in Hawaii and are being cultivated commercially. This fruit is commonly found in Australia, South Pacific countries, India, and other tropical countries.

The fruit and juice contain compounds that may potentially treat a variety of aliments such as Alzheimer’s disease, high blood pressure, and arthritic conditions.

A research study is being conducted sponsored by the The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to find out the effects of noni to patients with cancer due to new evident proofs that this plant can indeed help the patients.

Other research studies are being done regarding the ability of noni to fight auto-immune diseases and how it can have an effect on aging, diabetes and other diseases.

Side Effects
There are, however, a few side effects of this medicinal plant.

These are bloating and digestive problems, but they subside quickly. Increasing water intake helps alleviate the side effects of noni.

There are some people who are allergic to noni. Therefore, one should be very cautious when taking it for the first time.

In spite of these undeniably amazing health benefits that noni provides, it still best to consult first your doctor before taking noni juice or supplements.
