Porn Addiction: Is it a Disease?

The internet technology has made so many things much easier, including watching pornography. Before, if a person wanted to see a porn movie or read porn magazine, he would need to go a video or magazine store. Nowadays, anybody can access pornography materials 24 hours a day 7 days a week as long as there is a computer and an internet connection. It's not a surprise that more than 400 million adult web pages now exist online.

For many, there's nothing wrong with browsing through pornography from time to time. The major but comes in when a person's life is impaired with the uncontrollable compulsion to consume these materials. It becomes an abnormality when the activity results in excessive credit card expenses on pornography websites, lost sleep, neglected chores/work, and neglected family.

In more serious cases, addiction to pornography can lead to violent behavior, rape, assault, or even murder. This is because of the tolerance build-up, which is common in any form of addiction. Similar to an alcoholic who will gradually increase amount of alcohol intake as the tolerance builds up, a porn addict would eventually resort to unusual forms of sexual behavior. A person addicted to pornography may no longer find ordinary lovemaking pleasurable so he/she would need to engage in deviant sexual actions like sadism, pedophilia, sex with animals, and so on.

These are the reasons why although porn addiction does not yet belong to the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition) as an official mental disorder like other forms of addiction on gambling or use of drugs, many therapists have begun to take this condition a lot more seriously. Coping with pornography addiction is not easy. But these strategies can help significantly.

Therapy
The most effective way of dealing with any form of addiction is through a therapy with a competent therapist. As mentioned earlier, porn addiction is not yet considered a mental disorder, but many therapists have been trained to help people with this kind of addiction go through recovery more effectively.

Support Groups
Just as there are support groups for alcoholics and gambling addicts, there are also now support groups and programs for people recovering from pornography addiction. Sharing stories about what they have gone through and hearing inspirational talks from people who have survived this problem can certainly go a long way in treating this problem.

Self-Discipline
As they say, everything starts within oneself. Even if you have an expert therapist and supportive friends vouching for you and your recovery, if you don't help yourself, recovery would be much harder. It's very important for you to filter the content coming in from your internet. Use software programs that filter and prevent the entry of explicit material so you won't be able to succumb to temptations.

closing comment
Nobody will say pornography addiction is easy to resolve. But it's not impossible either. With the help of a good therapist, reliable support group, and strong willpower, you can overcome this problem in time.
