Hyperacidity is painful and annoying. It can hinder you from performing daily tasks and even diminish your quality of life. To manage this condition effectively, it’s important to have the right diet. This is because some foods have been known to cause acid reflux and trigger symptoms. Foods that worsen this condition vary from one person to another but the ones you should generally stay away from include the following:
Anything that is high in fat can worsen hyperacidity. This would include fried foods, fatty meats, and high fat dairy products. It’s best to remove these from your diet and to opt for less fatty alternatives such as lean meat, steamed/boiled/grilled foods, and low fat milk and cheese. Avoid ice cream and milk shake as well.
Soda, Alcohol, and Caffeinated Beverages
Some beverages are also notorious for triggering acidity symptoms. These would include coffee, soda, alcohol and tea. Even decaffeinated coffee can be a culprit. Alcohol like beer should be completely avoided since this weakens the lower esophageal sphincter muscle that contributes to acid reflux.
Acidic Fruits and Vegetables
You’ve always been advised to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables since these are packed with vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately, if you’re prone to hyperacidity, there are certain acidic fruits and vegetables that you can no longer consume. Some of these are citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, cranberry and grapefruits, as well as high acid vegetables like tomatoes, onions and garlic. Even the juice from the fruits should be avoided if you don’t want the painful sensation of acid running through your esophagus.
Chocolates and Mint
Who doesn’t love chocolates? Sadly for those who have acidity, this will have to be on the not-to-eat food list as this also weakens the lower sphincter muscle in the esophagus. Mints like peppermint and spear mint have the same effect so they should also be steered clear of.
Spices, meanwhile, such as pepper and chili are known to irritate the already damaged linings in the esophagus. For that reason, it’s important that you stay away from any food, dish or sauce that contains such spices. Even in the smallest quantity, this can trigger acid reflux.
For those who have sweet tooth, this is a major problem. Sweets and desserts including but not limited to butter cookies, brownies, doughnuts, and other pastries should not belong in your grocery shopping list anymore.
Moderate Amount of Consumption
It’s quite upsetting to see how many foods you have to avoid just to cope with this condition effectively. But you should also take note that it’s not always about the food but sometimes about the quantity. Some food items that cause hyperacidity can still be consumed as long as it’s done in moderation. Some of those that you can enjoy with discretion include low-acid orange juice, apple cider, peach, blueberries, strawberries, grapes, cooked onion, leeks, scallions, fried fish, chicken salad, scrambled eggs, tuna salad, hot dog, ham, yogurt, skim milk, low-fat cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, grains, garlic bread, muffin, granola cereal, and root beer.
