We have become a fat country. Most Americans and even other nationals would agree on that. The rate of obesity has doubled over the recent years. In fact, today, more than half of the American adults are overweight while nearly one third are obese.
Obesity, being the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States next to tobacco use, it is obviously a cause for concern. People who are overweight and obese are at much higher risk of serious ailments including diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, heart disease, stroke, blood clots, deep venous thrombosis, fatty liver disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, urinary incontinence, osteoarthritis, gallstones, colon cancer, endometrial cancer, and depression.
Needless to say, it is imperative that people do something about this problem. Whether you’re already obese or still on the road to obesity, it’s important to resolve the condition not just so you’d look good but also so you’d be in the pink of health.
There are two ways to treat obesity. One is through non-surgical methods and the other is through surgery.
The primary aspect of non-surgical treatment for obesity is a proper weight loss program that includes regular exercise and healthy diet. Losing weight when you’re already obese can be very difficult since it’s already hard to engage in physical activities. But you don’t have to lose all the excess weight. Even losing just 10 percent of your excess weight can already lower the risk of obesity-related ailments significantly.
Although this is the ideal option on losing weight, it’s not that effective for obese people. Only 5 percent of individuals who engage in these programs lose weight and maintain correct body weight for a long period.
The second method of treatment, which involves surgery, is known more specifically as bariatric surgery or weight-loss surgery. Experts agree that it is the more effective way of treating obesity that can bring about vast improvements on health. This surgery is done on the stomach or intestine.
It comes in two main types including the adjustable gastric banding and gastric bypass.
• gastric banding – In the first method, the band is inserted to restrict the size of the esophagus opening to the stomach. The opening size determines the amount of food that you can eat. By reducing the size of the opening, food intake will also be reduced significantly. The band can be removed anytime.
• gastric bypass – The other type is gastric bypass, which is sometimes called roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This one permanently reduces the stomach size. This would also reduce the amount of food that a person can take in.
Obesity is indeed a serious problem. It is not something that you can take sitting down. It is a must to learn about your options so you know what you need to do to prevent ailments from taking a toll in your life.
