Green Tea was first discovered about 5,000 years ago. Since then, it has been known to possess great medicinal benefits. Various studies have been made to investigate this matter, and it has been proved to be powerful as an antioxidant.

Green Tea Fights Free Radicals
Free radicals – they are the villains in this story. These harmful substances are present everywhere, even inside our bodies. They are the by-products of a process called oxidation, wherein oxygen is converted into energy. Free radicals damage DNA and cells, and can lead to premature aging, heart disease, strokes, and cancers.

Antioxidants are the defense mechanisms against these free radicals, fighting them to protect the cells from cellular damage and repairing any damage they might have already caused. That’s where green tea comes in since it is high in antioxidant content.

Compare it with the cost of other foods and beverages that are also said to be antioxidants, and you’d know how inexpensive green tea is. Not to mention, it is also a lot more potent. You’d get maximum health benefits for a much cheaper price. That’s how good it gets.

Green Tea Has a Synergistic Effect
Not only does green tea contain high concentration of catechins, it also provides other chemicals that promote a more efficient antioxidant activities. Green tea also contains gallic acid, carotenoids, tocopherols, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) as well as minerals like chromium, manganese, selenium, zinc and some phytochemical compounds.

It’s no wonder it exhibits higher antioxidant activities than vegetables like kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts, and garlic. A study done at the University of Kansas revealed that green tea is a hundred times more effective than vitamin C and 25 times more effective than vitamin E in cellular protection against free radical damage.

On top of all these, green tea is water-soluble. Unlike fat-soluble vitamin E, taking in too much green tea won’t cause harm to the body. It would simply be excreted from your body.
