What are Detox Meals?

Detoxification involves cleansing of the tissues and organs by giving them a break from the usual toxic elements that cause stress on the body. These include high-fat and high-sugar foods, smoking, and alcohol among others. The parts of the body responsible for the process of detoxification include liver, colon, kidneys, lungs, lymph system, skin and blood. By consuming detox diet meals, these organs can have a rest from the toxic elements and have enough power to regenerate new tissues and organs.

A detox diet is consumed from three to 21 days to remove the toxins from the body. There are plenty of reasons to go on a detox diet from time to time:
– It boosts the immune system, allowing the body to self-heal.
– It also raises energy levels while stimulating digestive health.
– clears the skin
– promotes mental clarity
– alleviates headaches
– improves the mood
– regains the body’s ability to fight viral infections
– On top of all these, detox diets prevent premature aging.

Types Of Detox Diets
There are plenty of detox diets that you can try out. Here are some:

– Lemonade Diet: This is a fasting that involves drinking only lemonade with grade B maple syrup and cayenne pepper.
– Juice Fasting: With this type of diet, you consume only fresh fruit and vegetable juices such as beet juice and wheatgrass juice along with plain water.
– Smoothie/Shake Fasting: Many people prefer the smoothie/shake fasting, wherein you consume nothing but pureed vegetable or fruit smoothies.
– Raw Food Detox Diet: This is based primarily on raw food or anything that has not been heated above 118 degrees.

Meal Ideas
At breakfast, drink a glass of water with squeeze of lemon. To fill up your appetite, puree organic berries and mix with orange juice. Eat a banana to satiate your hunger. You can also opt for a watermelon slice, a bowl of mixed fruits, or strawberries. For lunch and dinner, a raw salad is a good idea for detox meal. It provides nutritional value and requires little effort for digestion.

Other detox meals to consider include homemade guacamole, which is a mix of lemon juice, fresh chili, tomato, garlic and avocado. Serve this with vegetable sticks like carrot, celery and red pepper. You can also sip a warm tomato or broccoli soup.

Another idea is to top whole wheat pasta with steamed broccoli, butternut squash, or broiled fish. Mix in some marinara sauce for that needed zest. For snacks, try making your own vegetable juice from kale, spinach or romaine. Make sure that you add a lemon or apple slice to tone down the taste a bit.

The concept of getting rid of the toxins from the body is very attractive. Who wouldn’t want to improve their health, right? But it’s very important that before you consider taking on this type of diet, consult first with your doctor. Some people with certain conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease or anemia should not undergo detox diet.
